Ten years in the making, The Music of Islam series recorded in Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Yemen, Pakistan, Indonesia, Iran and Qatar represents the most comprehensive sound documentation available to Westerners today, of a world religion dating back to 1/622. Although governed by strict rules for fourteen centuries, contact with other cultures has radically affected Islamic music throughout history. As the world enters the XV/21st century the timing of this collection serves an even larger purpose, documenting the traditions that have survived and will continue to survive for centuries to come. Today, one fifth of the world's population, one billion people, are Muslims, occupying a large territory stretching from the Atlantic shore of north and west Africa, through west, central, and south Asia to island southeast Asia, and attracting an increasing following in India, western Europe, north America, east Asia, and southern Africa. This is a global presence which cannot be ignored.
Nearly 80 minutes playing time, this recording is a complete representation (sampler) of the series, featuring one selection from each of the fifteen volumes, seventeen CDs respectively.

A History of the Modern Middle East

This comprehensive work provides a penetrating analysis of modern Middle Eastern history, from the Ottoman and Egyptian reforms, through the challenge of Western imperialism, to the Iranian Revolution and the Gulf War. After introducing the reader to the region's history from the origins of Islam in the seventh century, Cleveland focuses on the past two centuries of profound and often dramatic change. While built around a framework of political history, the book also carefully integrates social, cultural, and economic developments into a single, carefully crafted account. The revised and updated third edition of this benchmark text places the developments of the 1990s in a new historical perspective and includes an examination of key events of the early twenty-first century. An epilogue offers a critical evaluation, from a historian's perspective, of the al-Qa'ida attacks of September 11th, 2001 and the early phases of the US occupation of Iraq.

Blood and Oil: The Middle East in World War I

Except for the Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaigns the extensive combat operations in the Middle East during World War I have been largely overlooked in documentary programs. Given the historical significance of the Ottoman Empire's demise in 1918 and the ongoing importance of Middle Eastern oil reserves to Western economies a close study of this conflict provides two important lessons: 1. The Treaty of Versailles agreed to by the Western Powers in 1919 paved the way for military and political chaos in the Middle East which continues to this very day. 2. Oil reserves in the Middle East became an important strategic concern for Western Powers helping to justify their economic diplomatic and military interference in the region. After the end of World War I most of the Ottoman Empire was carved up into "spheres of influence" controlled mostly by the British and French. The remaining territories became the modern state of Turkey in 1923 - after a five-year struggle by Turkish nationalists against Western domination. With little regard for cultural historical religious and demographic considerations the West sponsored the creation of several new nations: Iraq Syria Lebanon Palestine Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Thus a "tinderbox" was built from Western greed igniting a multitude of wars revolts coups and military occupations that truly have made the defeat of the Ottoman Empire little more than a hollow victory.System Requirements:Running Time: 112 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: DOCUMENTARIES/MISC.

The eighth edition of Arthur Goldschmidt’s widely acclaimed text has been extensively revised to reflect the latest scholarship and the most recent events in the Middle East. As an introduction to the history of this turbulent region from the beginnings of Islam to the present day, the book is distinguished by its clear style, broad scope, and balanced treatment. Written for undergraduate college students, the text assumes no prior knowledge of Middle Eastern history. It focuses on the evolution of Islamic institutions and culture, the influence of the West, the modernization efforts of Middle Eastern governments, the struggle of various peoples for political independence, the course of the Arab-Israeli conflict, the reassertion of Islamic values and power, the aftermath of the Gulf War, and issues surrounding the Palestinian Question. The eighth edition brings new discussion to the post-9/11 political developments and surveys terrorism in the Middle East, the Iraq War, and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

This long-time best-seller uses a thematic, rather than country-by-country, approach to the region in an analysis that is at once comprehensive and, at the same time, does not underestimate the intelligence of the college audience. The authors wrote this book because there were no introductory texts taking a holistic perspective on the region. This book employs a multidisciplinary approach (political science, economics, history, anthropology) to explain the current political dynamics of the region. It avoids a country-by-country approach in favor of a thematic approach that integrates regional experiences into a whole. Major themes include political development, economic development, international relations, Islam - mainstream and jihadist, colonialism and post-colonialism; and recent political changes, with particular emphasis on the U.S. intervention in Iraq and the rising interest in democracy regionally.

Extensively rewritten and revised, the third edition of A Political Economy of the Middle East retains a focus on the interaction of economic development processes, state systems, and social actors even as it also: Documents the many changes in demography, education, labor markets, urbanization, water and agriculture, and international labor migration in the Middle East in recent years; Considers the effect of rising oil prices on reinforcement of authoritarian governance in the region; Refines its assessment of “the Washington Consensus” to provide a more nuanced approach to the issue of the shifting balance of state and market in economic growth and reform (in an entirely rewritten Chapter 9); Presents Islamism as a vital force in the region that is nonetheless a vast, diverse social movement with many conflicting participants (in a wholly revised Chapter 14).

The revised and updated second edition of this benchmark text includes information on the Middle East since the close of the Cold War, and a new section on civil society and Islamic politics in the 1990s.

Middle East Patterns: Places, Peoples, and Politics

Now in its fourth edition, Middle East Patterns continues to be the only comprehensive, authoritative geographical study of the region. Colbert Held, a U.S. geographer who experienced firsthand and studied every country during his years of service in the region, has revised and updated his classic work while retaining the basic, well-received framework of past editions. Held examines the Middle East from a topical and then a regional, country-by-country perspective. A thoughtful consideration of the physical environment lays the groundwork for emphasis on cultural-political and geopolitical patterns, which are the essence of the study. Middle East Patterns has been widely commended for its careful balance in analyzing the several geopolitical problems of the area, notably the disputes regarding Israel and Palestine. Richly illustrated with 70 clear maps-virtually all hand drawn exclusively for this book-as well as over 100 photographs, Middle East Patterns now includes new, post-9/11 history and insight. Held addresses the ramifications of the Iraq war and includes a special new section specifically on terrorism. Students of the region will again welcome this fine resource for their coursework.

The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Middle East

Why most of what you think you know about the Middle East is wrong
The Middle East: a region that's almost never off the front pages, yet one most Americans know little about. The mainstream media and Ivy League academics only make matters worse by casting everything in the usual politically correct mold: Arab terrorists are just desperate freedom fighters, and the region's one free democracy--Israel--is the oppressor, not least because of its alliance with America. And if Islamic extremism is a problem, the establishment tells us, it's only because it's rooted in that source of all evils: religion. A different strain of political correctness has seeped into some minds on the right--most notably the Bush administration, which, so ready to buy into the egalitarian myths we are all taught, believed that Western-style democracy could flourish anywhere. Now, in The Politically Incorrect Guide(tm) to the Middle East, veteran Middle East correspondent Martin Sieff puts the lie to all these myths and cliches, giving you everything you need to know about the region to understand its past, its present, and its possible future. In The Politically Incorrect Guide(tm) to the Middle East, you'll learn:
* How, for three decades, the British supported parliamentary democracy throughout the Middle East, but it didn't work
* Why Britain's post-World War I Middle East policy was a comedy of errors and incompetence that soon escalated into tragedy
* Where America went wrong in Iraq: how U.S. policymakers vastly underestimated the intransigent, unsophisticated, and anti-Western nature of its competing communities
* How Saudi Arabia's security forces defeated al Qaeda--and why you never heard about it
* Why we'll miss the Arab dictators when they're gone
* How the Muslim nations of the Middle East took an irrevocable turn toward radical Islam not in the tenth century or after the fall of Baghdad to the Mongols in the thirteenth century--but in 1979
* How the Arab states openly declared their determination to prevent a Jewish state from being born in 1947--twenty years before the West Bank and Gaza were first occupied
The Politically Incorrect Guideto the Middle East is a bold first step toward facing the hard truths necessary for peace.

Hamdulillah, Vol. 2: Fes Festival of World Sacred Music

Recorded at the 1997 and 1998 Fes Festivals of World Sacred Music in Fes, Morrocco, Hamdulillah (an Arabic word meaning "Praise be to Allah") captures the unique ancient musics of Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Christians, and Hindustanis. Performed by renowned musicians and vocalists, primarily from the Middle East and North Africa, this extraordinary two-CD set radiates spiritual praise and bristles with musical virtuosity. Javanese gamelan, Jewish Sephardic, a bit of Christian, and various branches of Sufi devotional music--even the obsure muqam from Azerbaijan--are spotlighted.
The velvety voice of Amina Alaoui singing Spanish-rooted Andalusian Gharnati music greets the listener before they are guided over the craggy peaks of vigorous ensemble pieces (Taqtouqa Al Jabalyya and Begonia Olavide) and into the valleys of meditative vocal offerings (Alin Qassimov and Albert Bouhadanna), before resting at the stream of lovely, tinkling gamelan music. Singer Monajat Yulcheva's track particularly stands out for her pure tones and vocal mastery: she raises song from the well of her throat and sends it soaring to the desert sky. And if Yulcheva's expert fluttering doesn't do it for you, the 39-minute piece from the Whirling Dervishes of Konya will. Beginning with sparsely accompanied vocals, this 26-man ensemble of musicians, singers, and dancers take their time in building from slow, warm chant to a portentous, wavering march before finally sparking into a throbbing ecstastic fire. Hamdulillah (in addition to being the bargain-priced CD of the year) may be 1998's most unique recording yet. --Karen Karleski

The Modern Middle East: A Political History since the First World War

The first succinct and authoritative overview of the making of the modern Middle East, this lucid book brings a valuable mix of historical perspectives and contemporary analysis to a wide audience of readers seeking expert knowledge about this troubled and fascinating region. Giving a rich perspective on the region's historical and political evolution, the book traces the influence of factors such as religion, culture, and economics and illuminates events and topics currently in the news. With its broad thematic sweep and its balanced presentation of contentious issues, it is essential reading for general readers and students who want to better understand the world today.
Mehran Kamrava sets the stage with a concise discussion of the evolution of Islam and the religion's profound role in the region. He then looks at, in turn, the rise and fall of the Ottomans, the trials of independence and state-building, the emergence and fiery spread of nationalism, the two Arab-Israeli wars of 1967 and 1973, the Iranian Revolution, and the two Gulf Wars and beyond, including discussion of the invasion of Iraq by the United States. After tracing the consequences of these historical events for a host of political phenomena, Kamrava gives detailed attention to three pivotal issues: the challenges of economic development, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and the question of democracy. He also examines issues that will shape the future: population growth, environmental pollution, and water scarcity.

Zionist bombing of King David Hotel

 Narrator: Ian McKellen

July 22 1946 the KING DAVID HOTEL wing occupied by the British civil-military authorities in Jerusalem was blown up killing 91 people -- 28 British, 41 Arabs, 17 Jews and 5 others. The Irgun carried out the attack and claimed responsibility.

Mr. Begin's Irgun took on the task of blowing up the King David, but only after warning the British so that they would evacuate the building. Adina Hay-Nissan, then a teen-age girl who moved easily as an Irgun courier, was given the job of calling inthe warning.

She recalled that she had waited for a long time outside the hotel until she got a signal that the charges were planted. Then she telephoned the British command from a pharmacy across the street, she said, and spoke first in English, then in Hebrew: ''This is the Hebrew resistance uprising. We planted bombs in the hotel. Please vacate it immediately. See, we warned you.''

Then, she said, she ran to King George Street and phoned the French Consulate, which was near the hotel. Then she went farther along and phoned The Palestine Post, a newspaper that is now The Jerusalem Post. She walked slowly up Jaffa Road, and as she passed a police station near the market at Mahane Yehuda, she recalled, ''I heard the big explosion.'' When she learned later that the British had ignored her warnings, she said, ''I was baffled; there we were, genuinely trying to save lives, and they took no heed.''

The British went out of their way to try and prove there had been no warning. They clung to this lie as if it were an article of faith, and hitched to it all the official propaganda machinery available to them in this country and abroad.

They carried on with this even after the British Forces newspaper in the Middle East, the Middle East Post, reported in its 23 July issue (the day after the explosion): "Fifteen minutes before the explosion, the telephonist of the King David Hotel received an anonymous tip-off, warning that the hotel was about to go up and she should run for her life."

It took the British a little longer - 33 years - to admit that a warning had been given by the IZL: Lord Janner, formerly president of the Zionist Federation and not a political ally of Begin, made a speech in the House of Lords on 22 May 1979, a speech absolving the IZL of responsibility for the heavy loss of life caused by the bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in 1946. Ninety-one persons died in the King David Hotel explosion: 41 Arabs, 28 Britons, 17 Jews and five of other nationalities.

WHY DID Shaw not order the evacuation of the hotel?

Twenty-three years after the explosion - when he was interviewed for a Voice of Israel radio program - this was still a mystery to Begin: "...It didn't occur to them that we really had smuggled explosives into the hotel. As I've said before, it was a fortress, and it was hard for them to imagine us succeeding in penetrating the wire fence, evading the mobile patrols and the machine-gun emplacements and all the rest; and then there's the matter of the incendiary bomb outside, the one that preceded the main explosion - maybe they thought that was it, end of story! Perhaps they thought it was all a joke at their expense, meant as a blow to the prestige of the British government and the British empire; the Jews wanted to see the British ruling class running in panic from the hotel...They all should have gotten out, and what would it have mattered if it did turn out to be a false alarm, or just a smoke-bomb or something? If they assumed the warning wasn't serious and the intention was to humiliate them, that could explain why they preferred to stay put. And there's a third possibility: they were simply afraid to come out. Perhaps they thought we wanted to get them out of the fortress and into the open so we could ambush them. But of course these are only speculations. No one will know for certain, so long as Mr. Shaw declines to explain his reasons for not evacuating the hotel, despite the warning that was received."

Despite the bombing's importance, the contentious nature of the affair prevented the accurate recording of the chain of events leading up to it. The official account of the attack was not publicized by the Defense Ministry until the past few years. British accounts were kept confidential for 30 years, and to date some relevant documents remain closed in the British Foreign Office.

According to Neil Cobbett, of the British Public Record Office, certain documents pertaining to the bombing are kept closed because they may "cause distress to former members of the government, or personnel, or to public opinion."

The 1st is located in the Bahamas. The 2nd is being built and soon to be completed on the Palm Islands (the artificial Island)of Dubai, U.A.E. The place is impressive. Towards the end of my video, you will the tracks to the metro that will go to the hotel. By the way the Palm Islands are private and heavily guarded, not open to the public. Enjoy!

Tour of the Land Park Neighborhood in Sacramento, CA 95818

Presented by Erin Attardi, Realtor with Lyon Real Estate. Land Park lies just south of Downtown Sacramento - bordered by the I-5 Freeway to the west, Freeport Blvd to the east, William Land Park / Sutterville Road to the South, and Broadway to the North. This vintage neighborhood features homes built primarily from the 1930's to 1950's, and is well known for its serenity, tree-lined streets, unique architectural character, and close proximity to downtown Sacramento.

Land Park was named after former mayor and hotel owner William Land, who in upon his death in 1912, bequeathed $250,000 to Sacramento to develop an urban park where the general masses of the public could go. In 1918, after six years of debate, the city council voted 3-2 to purchase the 238 acres known as the Swanston-McKevitt tract on Riverside. in 1924, the tract was planted with 4,000 trees and 6,000 shrubs, and it became William Land Park. On May 25, 1924, William Land Golf Course opened for play. This was the first municipal course in Sacramento to have planted grass, yet it remained a 9 hole course.

There are many wonderful schools in and near Land Park, including Crocker/Riverside Elementary on Riverside between Robertson and Perkins, California Middle School on Vallejo and Land Park Drive, and CK McClatchy High School on Freeport between Bidwell and 7th.

Homes in Land Park oringially sold in the range of $3000 - $7500. Nowadays, you can purchase a home in Land Park for $300k - $400k on the less expensive end, and upwards of $1M on the high end.

From rap legend Internet Hero, featuring British rappers MC Davvy C and MC Drubert, and up and coming east coast talent from THA BLB.

INTERNET HERO
Lauren you can't afford to gain any weight,
Why the fuck you lyin' pretendin your fatass is straight?
Scrilla himself seen you on a lez cam site, dyke...
No need to lie your names not Lauren, it's Mike.
It's time to put down the cracker,
Your formed like an NFL middle linebacker..
If you started to rap, I'd mistake you for Fat Joe
But bitch, your tounge too fat, your words come out too slow..
Does it make you feel cool fakin' your pics over the net?
Does it make you feel cool taking pics with a ciggarette?
I feel bad for the ground if you ever fell,
Get off line, log off habbo hotel.

MC DAVVY C
I used to know a lil girl her name was Kelly Ryder,
Think about how hot it'd be if I could just ride her,
Think about how cool it'd be if i could get inside her,
Thought I'd always wanted to but never ever tried her,
When she said she didn't want it she had me suicidal,
Heart broken, must be jokin', girl you were my idol, no homo.
One day she turned it round, blamed it on the brown,
Started running with a nigger who came from outta town,
Round round, graphics graphics,
I wanna be with you girl, don't care about geographics,
Yeah, now your making them sigs,
Sometimes I look back and I think how big our love was,
But you were caught up in the drama,
With your best friend Chelsey it was '06 in the summer,
Became one with grammar, started usin' commas,
Turned yourself into a mature momma,
Yeh I wish it didn't happen so quick
I wish you didn't always go running to mom,
I wish i'd never made fun of your gums.
And when the time comes,
I'll be sittin in the slums with the bums, beating my drums,
Thinking about the girl you've become.

THA BLB
Beaner Steve he thinks hes raw,
But all he does is fucking fuck about with habbo whores,
And everytime they turn out to be a lad,
And that makes the beaner cunt sad.
When will he learn, he hasn't yet so ill give him a burn,
He also plays there.com,
Whilst sucking Nigger Deezy's dick all day long,
Has this beaner got a life?
I doubt it but hes got himself a habbo wife,
SZA? With all the lads hes dated I think hes gay,
Well what can I say?
You ban us from vent for no fucking reason,
How come you're not out stealing? Isn't that counted as treason?
I'd like to see you give some beef to me,
But I don't think you can keep up with this, you agree?
Bielby gave you this rap to you deep,
So fuck off beaner Steve and go fucking weep.

MC DRUBERT
Shilo love you aint like a normal teen,
Making graphics and voide.org magazine,
Any boy I know would run a mile,
When you get freaky internet style,
I thought you were a lad before I saw your feet,
Thought you had a bidda bidda unchartered meat,
Cuz girls aint meant to bum computers and shit,
Kelly's an exception cuz she's pretty fit,
Still I aint seen you so I don't have a scooby,
Gonna keep dissin' you till you prove you got boobies,
Fair enough going on forums and having a laugh,
But making mags and shit? You're having a bubblebath,
That'd do you good cuz I imagine you as a mess,
Library girl you got something to confess?

John McCain in Paris, France

ARIS (Map, News) - Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain said Friday that China is harming its world image with its crackdown in Tibet and expressed hope Beijing would seek a peaceful solution to the crisis.

McCain did not discuss the issue during a 45-minute meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, but told reporters later the subject was "one of the first things I would talk about if I were president of the United States today."

China's crackdown "is not correct," McCain said in the courtyard of the French presidential Elysee Palace.

"The people there are being subjected to mistreatment that is not acceptable with the conduct of a world power, which China is," McCain said in response to a question by a Chinese television journalist.

"There must be respect for human rights, and I would hope that the Chinese are actively seeking a peaceful resolution to this situation that exists which harms not only the human rights of the people there but also the image of China in the world."

The White House has urged Beijing to respect Tibetan culture and multi-ethnicity in its society.

McCain was in Paris for a matter of hours at the end of a weeklong tour of the Middle East and Europe. He was traveling as part of a U.S. congressional delegation - including Sens. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. - that visited Iraq, Jordan, Israel and London.

The delegation discussed a range of issues with Sarkozy, from climate warming and nuclear energy to the Middle East crisis, Iraq and Afghanistan, where France has troops.

McCain praised the state of U.S. relations with France, crediting Sarkozy, who was elected in May, with the high level of ties after years of tension that followed Paris' lead role in opposing the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq five years ago.

"I think our relations with France will improve no matter who is the president of the United States," he said.

The Arizona senator and apparent GOP presidential nominee has faced criticism from Democrats for not covering more of the cost of his overseas trip.

The McCain campaign said Thursday it would reimburse the federal government about $3,000 for political travel expenses incurred during his current trip to the Middle East and Europe.

Before traveling to Paris, McCain on Thursday was in Britain, where he attended a $1,000-per-person fundraising lunch at London's Spencer House. McCain has been traveling with Sens. Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., both supporters of his candidacy. The group had already been to Iraq, Jordan and Israel. The campaign has defended the mostly taxpayer financed trip as crucial for members of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Under terms reviewed by the Federal Election Commission and the Senate ethics committee, McCain will reimburse the federal government $3,000 for a one-night stay at a London hotel and first-class airfare from Washington to London because of the political nature of the event there. McCain had already agreed to pay more than $2,000 for the flight home.

In literature, the stage, film, and games

Aladdin, as seen in the Disney version.Adam Oehlenschläger wrote his drama Aladdin in 1805. Carl Nielsen wrote incidental music for this play.

In the United Kingdom, the story of Aladdin has been a popular subject for pantomime for over 200 years. The traditional Aladdin pantomime is the source of the well-known pantomime character Widow Twankey (Aladdin's mother). In pantomime versions of the story, changes in the setting and plot are often made to fit it better into "China" (albeit a China situated in London's East End rather than Medieval Baghdad). One version of the "pantomime Aladdin" is Sandy Wilson's musical Aladdin, from 1979. Since the early 1990s Aladdin pantos tend to be influenced by the Disney animation - for instance the 2007/2008 Birmingham version, which starred John Barrowman, and featured a variety of songs from the Disney movies Aladdin and Mulan.

In the 1960s Bollywood produced Aladdin and Sinbad, very loosely based on the original, in which the two named heroes get to meet and share in each other's adventures. In this version, the lamp's djinni (genie) is female and Aladdin marries her rather than the princess (she becomes a mortal woman for his sake).

The tale has been adapted to animated film a number of times, including Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp, the 1939 Popeye the Sailor cartoon.

In 1962 the Italian branch of the Walt Disney Company published the story Paperino e la grotta di Aladino (Donald and Aladdin's Cave), written by Osvaldo Pavese and drawn by Pier Lorenzo De Vita. In it, Uncle Scrooge leads Donald Duck and their nephews on an expedition to find the treasure of Aladdin and they encounter the Middle Eastern counterparts of the Beagle Boys. Scrooge describes Aladdin as a brigand who used the legend of the lamp to cover the origins of his ill-gotten gains. They find the cave holding the treasure which is blocked by a huge rock and it requires a variation of "Open Sesame" to open it, thus providing a link to Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. A Soviet film Volshebnaia Lampa Aladdina ("Aladdin's Magic Lamp") was released in 1966.

In 1982 Media Home Entertainment released Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.

Currently the form in which the medieval tale is best known, especially to the very young, is Aladdin, the 1992 animated feature by Walt Disney Feature Animation. In this version several characters are renamed (for instance the Sorcerer is renamed "Jafar" and has become a royal vizier), have new motivations for their actions (the Lamp Genie now desires freedom from his role) or are simply replaced (the Ring Genie disappears, but a magic carpet fills his place in the plot). The setting is moved from China to the fictional Arabian city of Agrabah, and the structure of the plot is simplified.

Broadway Junior has released Aladdin Junior, a children's musical based on the music and screenplay of the Disney animation.

One of the many retellings of the tale appears in A Book of Wizards and A Choice of Magic, by Ruth Manning-Sanders.

There was also a hotel and casino in Las Vegas named Aladdin from 1963 to 2007.

The game Sonic and the Secret Rings is heavily based on the story of Aladdin.

The Lion Habitat

 Lions

The lion (Panthera leo) is a member of the family Felidae and one of four "big cats" in the genus Panthera. With exceptional large males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight,[2] it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in the wild in sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East and western Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene (about 10,000 years ago), the lion was the most widespread large land mammal beside humans. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from western Europe to India and the Bering land bridge and in the Americas from Yukon to Peru.

Lions live for approximately 10--14 years in the wild, while in captivity they can live over 20 years. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of dominant males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator, although they will resort to scavenging if the opportunity arises. While lions, in general, do not selectively hunt humans, some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey.

The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of 30 to 50% over the past two decades in its African range;[1] populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not well-understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Lions have been kept in menageries since Roman times and have been a key species sought after and exhibited in zoos the world over since the late 18th century. Zoos are cooperating worldwide in breeding programs for the endangered Asiatic subspecies.

The male lion is highly distinctive and is easily recognized by its mane. The head of the male lion, is one of the most widely recognized animal symbols in human culture. It has been depicted extensively in literature, in sculptures, in paintings, on national flags, and in contemporary films and literature.

The lioness has been recognized, however, as the pinnacle of hunting prowess from the earliest of human writings and graphic representations. The lionesses are the hunters for their pride and execute their skills with precision and complex teamwork. Each lioness develops specific skills for her role in the hunting techniques used by her pride and, generally, assumes that role during most hunts. Members of human cultures living among lions in natural habitats have understood this characteristic and often have chosen the lioness to represent their most ferocious war deities and warriors, often naming their male rulers as her "son". Examples drawn from the earliest of written records include the Egyptian pantheon deities of Sekhmet, Bast, Menhit, and Tefnut and these deities may have had precursors in Nubia and Lybia. Other Egyptian deities are quite complex and assume aspects that may include one as a lioness headed human or a lioness in specific roles. Depictions of lions hunting in groups have existed from the Upper Paleolithic period, with carvings and paintings from the Lascaux and Chauvet Caves.

SPIRIT OF THE DANCE.El mejor bailarin del mundo.
Amir Thaleb, in Cairo
video by akon bananza!! original video clip
What we call belly dance is a theatrical version of the social folk dance done in Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries. Its an expression of celebration and fun done by both sexes.

The perofessional version we are use to seeing was developed in the nightclubs of Cairo in the 1930's. It has been done almost exclucively by women because it is tied into the tourism market where the majority of the customers in the nightclubs are male. In recent years, men have began to join their sisters on stage as well. The first modern male dancers began in the U.S.A. in the late '60's and 1970's, t
