Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, is undergoing a profound transformation that could lead to a variety of outcomes, from the consolidation of democracy to return to authoritarianism or military rule, to radical Islamic rule, or to violent disintegration. The stakes are high, for Indonesia is the key to Southeast Asian security. The authors examine the trends and dynamics that are driving Indonesia's transformation, outline possible strategic futures and their implications for regional stability, and identify options the United States might pursue in the critical challenge of influencing Indonesia's future course.

Illuminating account of the turbulent history of twentieth-century Indonesia.

Unfinished Nation traces the evolution of Indonesia from its anti-colonial stirrings in the early twentieth century to the lengthy, and eventually victorious, struggle against the dictatorship of President Suharto. In clarifying the often-misunderstood political changes that took place in Indonesia at the end of the twentieth century, Max Lane describes how small resistance groups inside the country directed massive political transformation. It shows how the real heroes were the Indonesian workers and peasants, whose sustained mass direct action was the determining force in toppling one of the most enduring dictatorships of modern times. Taking in the role of political Islam, and with considerations on the future of this fragmented archipelagic nation, Unfinished Nation is an illuminating account of modern Indonesian history.

Music of Indonesia, Vol. 20: Indonesian Guitars

Guitars are everywhere in Indonesia. Most Indonesian guitars are the standard acoustic instrument: a waisted flat body,a wooden soundboard, a long fretted neck, and six strings. Urban popular music may also use electric rock guitars and Hawaiian guitars. In some rural areas of eastern Indonesia, homemade instruments may be of crude construction, without frets and with only four strings, but if they approximate the size and waisted shape of the standard guitar, we consider them guitars for our purposes. Guitars occur in a small number of genres of Indonesian music, but they are prominent nevertheless, since some of the genres in which they figure-pop, dangdut, kroncong-are known throughout the country. They are used only in entertainment music and what we may call religious popular music. Their most common use is to accompany informal singing of popular songs, church songs in Christian communities, and regional or national folksongs (lagu rakyat). These are taught in school or are generally known, but are not perceived as originating in commercial popular music. (Yampolsky 1999)
Artisan Info: "My name is Putu Putri, the first child in my family. As most families in my village do, mine has worked with silver for several generations. My parents and grandparents are quite well known in the village, because their designs are highly regarded and the quality of their work is admired. They deserve the good reputation they have acquired because of their hard work. "Inspired by my family's spirit and their great support, I decided to venture on my own and design sterling silver jewelry in both traditional and modern styles. Some of my designs are cast in sterling silver only, while others combine silver with different gemstones.
A History of Modern Indonesia

Although Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world, its history is still relatively unknown. Adrian Vickers takes the reader on a journey across the social and political landscape of modern Indonesia, starting with the country's origins under the Dutch in the early twentieth-century, and the subsequent anti-colonial revolution which led to independence in 1949. Thereafter the spotlight is on the 1950s, a crucial period in the formation of Indonesia as a new nation, followed by the Sukarno years, and the anti-Communist massacres of the 1960s when General Suharto took over as president. The concluding chapters chart the fall of Suharto's New Order after thirty two years in power, and the subsequent political and religious turmoil which culminated in the Bali bombings in 2002. Adrian Vickers is Professor of Asian Studies at the University of Wollongong. He has previously worked at the Universities of New South Wales and Sydney, and has been a visiting fellow at the University of Indonesia and Udayana University (Bali). Vickers has more than twenty-five years research experience in Indonesia and the Netherlands, and has travelled in Southeast Asia, the U.S. and Europe in the course of his research. He is author of the acclaimed Bali: a Paradise Created (Penguin, 1989) as well as many other scholarly and popular works on Indonesia. In 2003 Adrian Vickers curated the exhibition Crossing Boundaries, a major survey of modern Indonesian art, and has also been involved in documentary films, including Done Bali (Negara Film and Television Productions, 1993).
The author contrasts the latter experience with life in Cairo, where some Southeast Asians were drawn to both reformism and nationalism. After demonstrating the close linkage between Cairene ideology and Indonesian nationalism, Laffan shows how developments in the Middle East continued to play a role in shaping Islamic politics in colonial Indonesia.

For thirty-two years, it had been paralyzed by the grip of the dictator and mystic General Suharto, but now the age of Suharto was coming to an end. Would freedom prevail, or was the “time of madness” predicted centuries before now at hand? A book of hair-raising immediacy and a riveting account of a voyage into the abyss, In the Time of Madness is an accomplishment in the great tradition of Conrad, Orwell, and Ryszard Kapuscinski.

ARISAN! caused quite a stir in Indonesia when it presented the first openly gay kiss between two male leads. Sakti is a handsome young architect living in Jakarta with his nagging mother. He is so deep in the closet that even he has not figured out he likes men. But those around him begin to suspect something is up when Sakti meets Nino, a good looking TV producer. Set around the traditional Arisan (gatherings) where women get together and gossip the afternoon away, this film is a wonderful look at Indonesian society and people's ability to accept each other no matter what the circumstances.

Music Of Indonesia 2: Indonesian Popular Music - Krongcong, Dangdut & Langgam Jawa

Kroncong and dangdut are two quite different Indonesian popular music genres that emerged in the capital city, Jakarta. Both styles of music are now "national" musics, sung in the lingua franca, Indonesian, and aimed at all Indonesians regardless of ethnic or regional affiliations. Both rely on Western and other foreign instruments including the violin, cello, flute, banjo, ukulele, and electric guitar, and their musical idioms are basically foreign. Ethnomusicologist Philip Yampolsky's compilation of live and studio recordings of some of the stars of each tradition is an excellent introduction to these popular music styles. Kroncong has its roots in Portuguese songs and instruments. It developed among the poor Eurasians of the late ninetheenth- and early twentieth-century Dutch colonial era in what was then Batavia. The basic accompanying instrument is the kroncong, similar to the ukulele. The emphasis was originally less on the music than the improvised verse form, pantun, which spawned competitions. When kroncong was later taken up by the popular theater and the recording industry, the improvised pantun gave way to fixed lyrics, and the element of competition dropped away. The modern idiom and instrumentation of kroncong were fixed by the late 1930s, and by 1940s and 1950s - a time of war and revolution - the themes of love gave way to patriotism and revolution. Today kroncong is popular mostly amongst the generation now in their 50s and 60s that experienced the fight for Indonesian independence. Dangdut developed among the lower class Javanese pribumi "natives" during the 1960s. It mixes Indian film music, American and British rock, and touches of Middle-Eastern pop. Dangdut has become a dance music, reaching across class to the male youth audience.

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls "Anne Lamott's hip, yoga-practicing, footloose younger sister") is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.
