Voyage to India

India Arie seems comfortable in her own body. She told us as much on both "Video" and "Brown Skin" from her stunning debut album, Acoustic Soul, which celebrated the diversity of feminine beauty, self-acceptance, and spirituality. She addresses similar themes on her second outing, although much of her original soul-scouring fire is gone. While she still preaches self-empowerment, many of her lyrics veer toward the trite, and that's not where we expected to go on this Voyage to India. In fact, there are very few self-revelatory moments like the ones on Soul. Arie seems bent on journeying to the center of womankind's mind, rather than unearthing more of her own autobiography, casting herself as adviser to the disempowered. But that is not where Arie shines. When she strips her voice down to its unvarnished essence--leaving all the imperfections in the mix--she is a lithe, ethereal presence. She's capable of raising chills, as when she sings of a man who foretells his death on "Good Man." Or on "Complicated Man," where she lets her voice run ragged, brimming with raw emotion while describing her imperfect love. Despite some glibness, this is still a voyage worth taking. --Jaan Uhelszki

The Soul Of India

India defies every attempt at definition. You'd run out of ink, or paint or videotape before you'd even begun to find her, let alone capture her. Take the landscape. There are jungles straight out of Rudyard Kipling, deserts to make Lawrence of Arabia weep with envy, the highest mountains in the world, tropical beaches, fading colonial hill stations, crowded cities. Indians are as varied as their landscapes. More than one billion people. Thousands of languages. Almost every religion known to man. And somehow all of it mixed into one vast, raucous and unruly democracy. To make his brand new film The Soul Of India, travel filmmaker Rick Ray spent 4 months in India, braving heat, cold, altitude, earthquakes and riots to patch together a unique and personal tapestry of this nearly indescribable country. We will visit familiar sites like the Taj Mahal, the palaces and forts of Rajasthan, the Himalayas and the River Ganges. We will also peer into an India that few visitors see - a land of villages and inner cities, a country in which reside the hopes and dreams of 1/6th of the earth's population. Our tour will take us to India s bustling cities of Bombay, New Delhi and Calcutta. We will also visit quiet and tranquil landscapes in South India and in the Himalayas. We ll explore the majesty of legendary cities like Varanasi, Agra, Udaipur, Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaiselmer. The majesty and mystery of South India will come alive with trips to kerala s famous Backwaters, silk factories, Cochin, Madurai and so much more. We will visit maharaja palaces, visit a camel festival, ride on the luxury Palace On Wheels, and see sides of the Taj Mahal that few ever explore. All of India s religions will be explained in depth, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, the Jain faith and the Sikh faith. We ll learn how political events have shaped the landscape and how the influence of the British empire brought ideas and concepts still deeply rooted in the Indian psyche today. We ll explore concepts such as the caste system, democracy, marriage, privacy, life and death and see how they differ from our preconceptions in the West. India is a challenge to the senses, to the mind and to everything we in America take for granted. If you come to terms with her nearly infinite diversity, her stunning vitality and her in-your-face energy, you will learn a great deal about yourself. In the process, you will learn a great deal about the rest of humanity. Once you have glimpsed the kaleidoscope of color, the encyclopedia of experience that is India, you'll probably agree that you have discovered the most colorful and fascinating country on earth.

Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship

Log onto an India.Arie lyrics page and you won't come away expecting an easy-breezy listen--here's an artist, remember, who made a name for herself by declaring her disdain for silicone and Cristal on her 2001 debut. What's consistently a revelation for new recruits to the Arie camp, then, is how good the music makes you feel. No matter how heavy the subject matter (and it still gets heavy--God surfaces in the first verse of "Intro," the prayerful opening song), she delivers it in such a way that it ends up feeling like homespun wisdom--accessible, cloudless, and heartening. Testimony, no minor R&B/soul achievement, is full of such earth-mother moments: "The Heart of the Matter," a cover of the Don Henley song, is what a hug might sound like if it were music; "There's Hope" reminds tunefully that you don't have to pay to smile ("You better thank God for that"); "Private Party" points up the benefits of getting naked before a mirror and liking what you see (impossible as that sounds, it'll seem less so after listening); and "I Am Not My Hair," a sexy thumper featuring Akon, celebrates not the hair, not the skin, but "the soul that lives within." Musically, "Testament" is a testament to the benefits of branching out; in addition to gospel and hip-hop, you'll also find country and pure pop forays here. All of it works, and works wondrously. Arie may be the Oprah of the music world: she's spiritual, she's got her head screwed on straight, and whatever she touches turns to gold. Or at least it ought to. --Tammy La Gorce

This adaptation of E.M. Forster's mysterious tale of British racism in colonial India turned out to be master director David Lean's final film. Subtle and grand at the same time, Lean's adaptation is faithful to the book, rendering its blend of the mystical and the all-too human with exquisite precision. Judy Davis plays a young British woman traveling in India with her fiancé's mother. While visiting a tourist attraction, she has a frightening moment in a cave--one that she eventually spins from an instant of mental meltdown into a tale of a physical attack that ruins several lives. Lean captures Forster's sense of awe at the kind of ageless wisdom and inexplicable phenomena to be encountered in India, as well as the British tendency to dismiss it all as savage, rather than simply different. --Marshall Fine

A Passage to India

What really happened in the Marabar caves? This is the mystery at the heart of E.M. Forster's 1924 novel, A Passage to India, the puzzle that sets in motion events highlighting an even larger question: Can an Englishman and an Indian be friends?
"It is impossible here," an Indian character tells his friend, Dr. Aziz, early in the novel.
"They come out intending to be gentlemen, and are told it will not do.... Why, I remember when Turton came out first. It was in another part of the Province. You fellows will not believe me, but I have driven with Turton in his carriage--Turton! Oh yes, we were once quite intimate. He has shown me his stamp collection.
"He would expect you to steal it now. Turton! But red-nosed boy will be far worse than Turton!
"I do not think so. They all become exactly the same, not worse, not better. I give any Englishman two years, be he Turton or Burton. It is only the difference of a letter. And I give any Englishwoman six months. All are exactly alike."
Written while England was still firmly in control of India, Forster's novel follows the fortunes of three English newcomers to India--Miss Adela Quested, Mrs. Moore, and Cyril Fielding--and the Indian, Dr. Aziz, with whom they cross destinies. The idea of true friendship between the races was a radical one in Forster's time, and he makes it abundantly clear that it was not one that either side welcomed. If Aziz's friend, Hamidullah, believed it impossible, the British representatives of the Raj were equally discouraging.
"Why, the kindest thing one can do to a native is to let him die," said Mrs. Callendar.
"How if he went to heaven?" asked Mrs. Moore, with a gentle but crooked smile.
"He can go where he likes as long as he doesn't come near me. They give me the creeps."
Despite their countrymen's disapproval, Miss Quested, Mrs. Moore, and Mr. Fielding are all eager to meet Indians, and in Dr. Aziz they find a perfect companion: educated, westernized, and open-minded. Slowly, the friendships ripen, especially between Aziz and Fielding. Having created the possibility of esteem based on trust and mutual affection, Forster then subjects it to the crucible of racial hatred: during a visit to the famed Marabar caves, Miss Quested accuses Dr. Aziz of sexually assaulting her, then later recants during the frenzied trial that follows. Under such circumstances, affection proves to be a very fragile commodity indeed.
Arguably Forster's greatest novel, A Passage to India limns a troubling portrait of colonialism at its worst, and is remarkable for the complexity of its characters. Here the personal becomes the political and in the breach between Aziz and his English "friends," Forster foreshadows the eventual end of the Raj. --Alix Wilber

Chants Of India: Ravi Shankar; George Harrison

Mantram is Ravi Shankar's effort to set Sanskrit chants from ancient Hindu scriptures to music, and the result is a captivating mix of chant and music. Produced by George Harrison, this collection of mantras and prayers from the Vedas, Upanishads, and other scriptures powerfully transports the listener to a place of peace where it's possible to be one with the universe. It's as if a heavy, enveloping cloak of serenity falls from the dark, floating sounds of cello opening the CD. Shankar employs flute, tamboura, harp, and other instruments to accent the mighty "Om" thread that weaves itself through the cloth of this album, bringing together deep, ominous voices with delicate, earthly instruments. One looking for extensive Shankar sitar might be disappointed, but the beauty of this artist's creativity and spiritual vision sweeps one away into a larger, more meaningful listening experience. Highly recommended. --Karen Karleski

Acoustic Soul

India Arie's Acoustic Soul is just as advertised: grooving soul music with an acoustic bent. Arie herself plays guitar, supplemented by strings (instead of synthesizers) and drums (instead of drum machines). The first single, "Video," is a calm, confident ode to self-love, comparing the dreadlocked, petite Arie to the average girl in a video. Arie is indeed anything but average: her debut marks the auspicious return of the black female singer-songwriter, in the vein of Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Tracy Chapman, and Dionne Farris. If you like their music, with thoughtful lyrics and layers of instrumentation, you'll love this album. "Video" is fabulous, but other high points include "Ready for Love," a lament that smolders before slowly building to a crescendo, with tinkling piano, guitar, and cello swelling beneath the vocal. "Strength, Courage, and Wisdom" is an optimistic anthem that'll have you clapping your hands and swaying from side to side, and the best track on the album, "Simple," is a straightforward love song with a pulsating beat. Acoustic Soul may not be full of radio-friendly tracks, but every track is strong, and the disc improves each time you press play. --Courtney Kemp

Passage to India

Young Lenny Sethi is kept out of school because she suffers from polio. She spends her days with Ayah, her beautiful nanny, visiting with the large group of admirers that Ayah draws. It is in the company of these working class characters that Lenny learns about religious differences, religious intolerance, and the blossoming genocidal strife on the eve of Partition. As she matures, Lenny begins to identify the differences between the Hindus, Moslems, and Sikhs engaging in political arguments all around her. Lenny enjoys a happy, privileged life in Lahore, but the kidnapping of her beloved Ayah signals a dramatic change. Soon Lenny’s world erupts in religious, ethnic, and racial violence. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, the domestic drama serves as a microcosm for a profound political upheaval.

Soy Diferente

Diehard salsa fans have grumbled about the artistic liberties taken by genre queen India on Soy Diferente, her first disc under the Univision label. Indeed, this is an adventurous, all-over-the-map outing, most notable for its incorporation of the red-hot reggaeton rhythms currently burning up radio playlists. Purists may scoff and call it a play for commercial viability, but Soy Diferente is still a strong showcase for India's emotive, urgent vocal work. She also co-wrote all of the album's tracks. Fans should also recall that India dabbled in jazz, hip-hop and English-language club music before--and after--hitting her stride as a salsa queen. The title track is featured in both a reggaeton version and as a "salsaton" shaker, which flows seamlessly between the two genres. "Cuando Hieres A Una Mujer" is a straight-ahead salsa track, buoyed by the appearance of reggaeton diva Ivy Queen. Salsa legend Tito Nieves offers tempting vocal licks during "No Es Lo Mismo;" and India's mother, Gloria Viera, pops up during the sweet-and-spicy "Madre e Hija aka Madre." And India is still at her sizzling best amid the blaring horns and sweltering percussion of salsa tracks "Un Amor Obsesivo," "Lagrimas" and "Tengo Que Dejarte Ir." Whatever the sound, India effortlessly proves that being Diferente is definitely a great thing. --Joey Guerra

Manzira India Musical Instruments

The Manjira is a traditional percussion instrument in India. The manjira, in its simplest form, is a pair of small hand cymbals.
The Manjira is used in various religious ceremonies of India, especially bhajans - devotional songs dedicated to some Indian god or goddess.
The manjira can also consist of a wooden frame with two long straight handles that connect to each other with two short wooden handles; the open space between the long handles has a wooden separator that separates two rows of three (total of six) brass jingles.
Indian folk music is diverse because of India's vast cultural diversity. It has many forms including bhangra, lavani, dandiya and Rajasthani. The arrival of movies and pop music weakened folk music's popularity, but cheaply recordable music has made it easier to find and helped revive the traditions. Folk music (desi) has been influential on classical music, which is viewed as a higher art form. Instruments and styles have impacted classical ragas. It is also not uncommon for major writers, saints and poets to have large musical libraries and traditions to their name, often sung in thumri (semi-classical) style. Most of the folk music of India is dance-oriented.

A Passage To India (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
