With your limited resources, can you construct the most efficient rail network? Can you deliver needed goods more quickly than your competitors? Can you prove to the People and the Party that you, and you alone, deserve to be named the "Minister of Railroads"? Events and disasters, both natural and man-made, will stand in your way. But if your plan is sound and your tactics are true, you shall overcome them all and claim your victory.

China Doll

Victor Mature's long-suffering, bloodhound visage is the central image in Frank Borzage's wartime romance drama China Doll, a perfect example of what critic Andrew Sarris once referred to as Borzage's films about war as an intrusion on the emotional privacy of lovers. Mature plays Air Force Captain Cliff Brandon, stationed in China and training elite pilots by day during World War II. At night, Brandon becomes a drunken loner shunning the company of his men, Red Cross nurses, and local women who try to sell him comfort. Things change when Brandon, stumbling home from a bar, agrees to buy an old Chinese man's daughter, Shu-Jen (Li Hua Li), for three months, a decision the officer instantly regrets in the cold light of day. Convinced by his sole confidante--a priest (Ward Bond) running an orphanage--that the only honorable way out is to let Shu-Jen fulfill her three-month obligation, Brandon soon finds himself falling for her and re-embracing life. With the world on a collision course with itself, however, Brandon and Shu-Jen's shared destiny departs from the life of mutual salvation and closeness they've earned. Borzage's delicacy with the love story finds echoes in parallel relationships between other characters. In fact, struggling for a clear path to intimacy in the midst of battle seems very much on the minds of everyone in this movie. Action sequences are reasonably crisp, though they're not designed to thrill so much as devastate viewers. A climactic scene set at an Air Force base under attack by Japanese pilots is one of the most powerful and poignant wartime visions in American cinema. --Tom Keogh

In sumptuous and illuminating detail, Simon Winchester, the bestselling author of The Professor and the Madman ("Elegant and scrupulous"—New York Times Book Review) and Krakatoa ("A mesmerizing page-turner"—Time) brings to life the extraordinary story of Joseph Needham, the brilliant Cambridge scientist who unlocked the most closely held secrets of China, long the world's most technologically advanced country.

No cloistered don, this tall, married Englishman was a freethinking intellectual, who practiced nudism and was devoted to a quirky brand of folk dancing. In 1937, while working as a biochemist at Cambridge University, he instantly fell in love with a visiting Chinese student, with whom he began a lifelong affair.

He soon became fascinated with China, and his mistress swiftly persuaded the ever-enthusiastic Needham to travel to her home country, where he embarked on a series of extraordinary expeditions to the farthest frontiers of this ancient empire. He searched everywhere for evidence to bolster his conviction that the Chinese were responsible for hundreds of mankind's most familiar innovations—including printing, the compass, explosives, suspension bridges, even toilet paper—often centuries before the rest of the world. His thrilling and dangerous journeys, vividly recreated by Winchester, took him across war-torn China to far-flung outposts, consolidating his deep admiration for the Chinese people.

After the war, Needham was determined to tell the world what he had discovered, and began writing his majestic Science and Civilisation in China, describing the country's long and astonishing history of invention and technology. By the time he died, he had produced, essentially single-handedly, seventeen immense volumes, marking him as the greatest one-man encyclopedist ever.

Both epic and intimate, The Man Who Loved China tells the sweeping story of China through Needham's remarkable life. Here is an unforgettable tale of what makes men, nations, and, indeed, mankind itself great—related by one of the world's inimitable storytellers.

China Road: A Journey into the Future of a Rising Power

Route 312 is the Chinese Route 66. It flows three thousand miles from east to west, passing through the factory towns of the coastal areas, through the rural heart of China, then up into the Gobi Desert, where it merges with the Old Silk Road. The highway witnesses every part of the social and economic revolution that is turning China upside down.

In this utterly surprising and deeply personal book, acclaimed National Public Radio reporter Rob Gifford, a fluent Mandarin speaker, takes the dramatic journey along Route 312 from its start in the boomtown of Shanghai to its end on the border with Kazakhstan. Gifford reveals the rich mosaic of modern Chinese life in all its contradictions, as he poses the crucial questions that all of us are asking about China: Will it really be the next global superpower? Is it as solid and as powerful as it looks from the outside? And who are the ordinary Chinese people, to whom the twenty-first century is supposed to belong?

Gifford is not alone on his journey. The largest migration in human history is taking place along highways such as Route 312, as tens of millions of people leave their homes in search of work. He sees signs of the booming urban economy everywhere, but he also uncovers many of the country’s frailties, and some of the deep-seated problems that could derail China’s rise.

The whole compelling adventure is told through the cast of colorful characters Gifford meets: garrulous talk-show hosts and ambitious yuppies, impoverished peasants and tragic prostitutes, cell-phone salesmen, AIDS patients, and Tibetan monks. He rides with members of a Shanghai jeep club, hitchhikes across the Gobi desert, and sings karaoke with migrant workers at truck stops along the way.

As he recounts his travels along Route 312, Rob Gifford gives a face to what has historically, for Westerners, been a faceless country and breathes life into a nation that is so often reduced to economic statistics. Finally, he sounds a warning that all is not well in the Chinese heartlands, that serious problems lie ahead, and that the future of the West has become inextricably linked with the fate of 1.3 billion Chinese people.

“Informative, delightful, and powerfully moving . . . Rob Gifford’s acute powers of observation, his sense of humor and adventure, and his determination to explore the wrenching dilemmas of China’s explosive development open readers’ eyes and reward their minds.”
–Robert A.

Once you settle into the realization that this 1986 John Carpenter (Halloween) film is not going to be one of the director's more masterful works, Big Trouble in Little China just becomes a full-tilt comic blast. Kurt Russell is hilarious as a drawling, would-be John Wayne hero who steps into the middle of a supernatural war in the heart of Chinatown. While kung fu warriors and otherworldly spirits battle over the fate of two women (Kim Cattrall and Suzee Pai), Russell's swaggering idiot manages to knock himself out or underestimate the forces he's dealing with. The whole thing is dopey, but it's supposed to be dopey and Russell's game performance brings an ironic edge. Carpenter directs some nifty spook effects (the sudden arrival of three martial arts demigods from out of nowhere is worth applause), and he also wrote the music. --Tom Keogh
While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed.

Writing with an eye to explaining recurring themes in Chinese history, she discusses ideas of order and statecraft, resource allocation and use, imperialism and population growth. Along the way she makes interesting asides, noting, among other things, that the Mongol conquerors of China monopolized the bamboo trade because they did not want the ethnic Chinese to make weapons, and she gives stimulating overviews of such matters as the manufacture of silk, hardwood furniture, and ceramics.
These specialized pencils and markers go by many names-- wax pencils, grease pencils, china markers. They provide solutions when you have to write or draw on a smooth surface (surfaces to which many other writing tools don't adhere) such as glass, metal, polished and natural stone, ceramics, plastic, tile and mylar.

But unlike indelible markers and pens, you get a firm, clear mark that you can easily clean when you need. The markings rub off easily with a dry tissue or lint-free cotton wiper. To "sharpen", one needs only to unravel the wrapper.

James Bridges (Urban Cowboy, Bright Lights, Big City) directed this 1979 film that became a worldwide sensation when, just weeks after its release, the Three Mile Island nuclear accident occurred. Jane Fonda (Klute, Julia) plays a television news reporter who is not taken very seriously until a routine story at the local nuclear power plant leads her to what may be a cover-up of epic proportions. She and her cameraman, played by Michael Douglas (Wall Street, American President), hook up with a whistleblower at the plant, played by Jack Lemmon (Save the Tiger, Missing). Together they try to uncover the dangers lurking beneath the nuclear reactor and avoid being silenced by the business interests behind the plant. Though topical, the film (produced by Douglas) works on its own as a socially conscious thriller that entertains even as it spurs its audience to think. --Robert Lane

The China Price: The True Cost of Chinese Competitive Advantage

A landmark eyewitness exposŽ of how China's factory economy competes for Western business by selling out its workers, its environment, and its future

In The China Price, acclaimed Financial Times correspondent Alex Harney uncovers the truth about how China is able to offer such amazingly low prices to the rest of the world. What she has discovered is a brutal, Hobbesian world in which intense pricing pressure from Western companies combines with ubiquitous corruption and a lack of transparency to exact an unseen and unconscionable toll in human misery and environmental damage.

In a way, Harney shows, what goes on in China is inevitable. In a country with almost no transparency, where graft is institutionalized and workers have little recourse to the rule of law, incentives to lie about business practices vastly outweigh incentives to tell the truth. Harney reveals that despite a decade of monitoring factories, outsiders all too often have no idea of the conditions under which goods from China are made. She exposes the widespread practice of using a dummy or model factory as a company's false window out to the world, concealing a vast number of illegal factories operating completely off the books. Some Western companies are better than others about sniffing out such deception, but too many are perfectly happy to embrace plausible deniability as long as the prices remain so low. And in the gold-rush atmosphere that's infected the country, in which everyone is clamoring to get rich at once and corruption is rampant, it's almost impossible for the Chinese government's own underfunded regulatory mechanisms to do much good at all.

But perhaps the most important revelation in The China Price is how fast change is coming, one way or another. A generation of Chinese flocked from the rural interior of the country to its coastline, where its factory work largely is, in the largest mass migration in human history. But that migration has slowed dramatically, in no small part because of widespread disenchantment with the way of life the factories offer. As pollution in China's industrial cities worsens and their infrastructure buckles, and grassroots activism for more legal recourse grows, pressures are mounting on the system that will not dissipate without profound change. Managing the violence of that change is the greatest challenge China faces in the near future, and managing its impact on the world economy is the challenge that faces us all.

Mahjong Escape Ancient China

Based on the classic match-2 mahjong tile gameplay, it places you at the helm of a treasure hunt in which your ability to complete levels dictates your progression not only through time, but as a collector of both fine and exotic relics. Ultimately, your prowess will lead you to the greatest treasures this civilization has to offer. If that were not enough, your travels are further rewarded by offerings of wisdom; generational secrets that will both soothe and provide wisdom to our overly fast-paced life.

The Dynasty Adventure on the other hand is like choosing the deluxe sight-seeing tour where you are whisked luxury-style through time. Adventure is full of rewarding experiences and includes 5 unique powerup tiles to help you along your journey. Both game styles offer the same enjoyable characteristics and are designed with 'fun' and 'relaxation' in mind.
Strategy Tips and Tricks

As in all Mah Jong (or Mahjongg solitaire) games, you are asked to clear the layout by matching 'tile pairs'. Season (Summer, Winter, Fall and Spring) tiles and the Flowers (Orchid, Plum Blossom, Bamboo, Chrysanthemum) are unique in the game because any Season matches with any Season and any Flower matches with any Flower.

To select tiles, you may choose free tiles without any obstructing tiles above or beside them (these tiles are called "free", as in free to match). If you can't find a match, don't worry - you will be given an auto hint where two tiles on the board will begin to highlight and animate. When you see 3 of a tile available, choose to remove the pair that uncovers the most tiles - choose wisely.

As far as strategy goes, the object of the game is to relax and have fun, but if there is one bit of strategic advice to offer this is it: it is best to remove tiles in the tall towers and the long lines first (and when 4 of a tile are available remove all 4 of them to simplify the board and get 500 bonus points!).

Heart of China

A light-hearted romantic adventure somewhat reminiscent of films such as "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Guide former WWI ace Jake Masters through 1930s Asia as he attemps to rescue Sarah Michelle Gellar lookalike Kate Lomax, the kidnapped daughter of a ruthless American land baron. A fun game with a decent plot, and memorable characters.

"Heart of China" is realistic not also because of its setting, which is real China early in the 20th century, but mainly because of its gameplay. It is an adventure which is not based on puzzles (although it surely features more puzzles than "Rise of the Dragon"), but on dialogue choices which advance the story. We have seen many games which merged fantastically tough and complicated puzzles with dialogue-driven gameplay, such as Gabriel Knight or Tex Murphy games, but very few which were ready to give up or at least to weaken the puzzle-solving aspect of an adventure, in order to give free room to realistic experience and to dialogue choices which really matter. "Heart of China" is one of those games. It has puzzles, but they are woven into the body of the game and do not disturb the flow of the story. The dialogue choices are the core of the game, and you must be careful when choosing a dialogue line, because it is quite easy to die in the game (although maybe not as easy as in "Rise of the Dragon").

Graphically, "Heart of China" is brilliant, with even more lucious, beautifully designed backgrounds than "Rise of the Dragon", and faces of real actors nicely filmed and integrated into the game's graphics.

And, last but not the least, "Heart of China" is funny. The easy-going hero Lucky is a constant object of jokes from the Chinese, and he surely can joke himself. The game is not less amusing than such classics of laughter as "Simon the Sorcerer" or "Sam and Max Hit The Road".

The China Study offers conclusive evidence that a change of diet can dramatically reduce the risks of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. The book is based on the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted, a 20-year joint project between Cornell University, Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine. The study surveyed the eating habits of 6,500 adults from all over China and Taiwan and found a direct correlation between diet and disease. Author T. Colin Campbell, the study’s project director, provides an intelligent, well-documented analysis of the study’s results, an analysis that explodes the most common American dietary myths. In addressing the dietary sources of the most common diseases, including cancer, Campbell unleashes a no-holds-barred attack on the commercial interests that profit by selling the American public unhealthy food. He also shows how readers can use the study’s results to change their diets and improve their health.

This fascinating game of domination combines multiple tactical possibilities with simple-to-learn rules and a short playing time! Even today in China, the unmistakable evidence of a fascinating story is everywhere. Hundreds of years ago, the country teetered on the brink of a change in power. Regional rulers fought continuously with each other with only one goal in mind: to become the new Emperor. They erected imposing houses and sent their emissaries to the regional courts. China is an abstracted game of political influence in China. Players use cards to place pieces (Houses or Emissaries) into the nine regions on the board. When all house spaces in a region are filled (or at the end of the game), players score for majorities of houses in that region. At game end, players then score for having majorities of emissaries in two adjacent regions. Players also score for having four or more houses in an uninterrupted sequence along one of the roads on the board.

"Forbes has a fine, velvety voice." -- Stephen Brookes, Washington Post "China Forbes has a clear and precise instrument, the perfect voice to convey cosmopolitan air." -- Nate Chinen, New York Times
For ten years, China Forbes has toured the world as lead singer of the celebrated "little orchestra" Pink Martini. Invited to join the band by Harvard classmate Thomas M. Lauderdale, Forbes set aside a blossoming career as a singer-songwriter to front the ensemble full-time. Praised as "an unpretentious pitch-perfect chanteuse" by John Pareles of the New York Times, Forbes has grown into an accomplished performer and built a devoted, diverse fan base around the globe. On her long-awaited solo album, Forbes dusts off her guitar and returns to her roots, displaying strikingly personal songs in a style all her own. Filled with intimate stories of love, loneliness, friendship, and alienation, Forbes recorded the album in her hometown with producer/drummer Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, The Wallflowers, Dandy Warhols). The stolen sessions allowed Forbes to work discreetly when not on the road with Pink Martini, resulting in a true expression of relaxed creativity. While '78 is a noted departure from the sounds of Pink Martini, fans will recognize the autobiographical "Hey Eugene," appearing here as it was originally written. Backed by Gregg Williams and Eric Earley (Blitzen Trapper), with cameos by Eric Matthews and Phil Baker (Pink Martini), Forbes plays a variety of instruments--including guitar, piano, bass, harmonium, and Wurlitzer-- making this record clearly and uniquely hers.

–Robert A.
China Shakes the World: A Titan's Rise and Troubled Future -- and the Challenge for America

"Let China sleep, for when she wakes, she will shake the world." Napoleon's words seem eerily prescient today, as the shock waves from China's awakening reverberate around the globe. Award-winning journalist James Kynge takes measure of the tremors made as China's ravenous hunger for jobs, raw materials, energy, and food ? and its export of goods, workers, and investments ? drastically reshapes world trade and politics. Through dramatic stories of the people who are driving China's transformation ? entrepreneurs and visionaries, factory workers and store clerks ? Kynge describes the breakneck rise of China, the extraordinary problems the country now faces, and the consequences of both.

A Bull in China: Investing Profitably in the World's Greatest Market

If the twentieth century was the American century, then the twenty-first century belongs to China. Now the one and only Jim Rogers shows how any investor can get in on the ground floor of “the greatest economic boom since England’s Industrial Revolution.”

In this indispensable new book, one of the world’s most successful investors, Jim Rogers, brings his unerring investment acumen to bear on this huge and unruly land now being opened to the world and exploding in potential.

Rogers didn’t just wake up a Sinophile yesterday. He’s been tracking the Chinese economy since he first went to China in 1984 in preparation for his round-the-world motorcycle trip and then again, later, when he saw Shanghai’s newly reopened stock exchange (which looked like an OTB office). In the decades that followed–especially in recent years, with the easing of Communist party financial dictates–the facts speak for themselves:

• The Chinese economy’s growth rate has averaged 9 percent since the start of the 1980s.
• China’s savings rate is over 35 percent (in America, it’s 2 percent).
• 40 percent of China’s output goes to exports (so there’s no crippling foreign debt).
• $60 billion a year in direct foreign investment, combined with a trade surplus, has brought Beijing’s foreign currency reserves to over $1 trillion.
• China’s fixed assets–ports, bridges, and roads–double every two and a half years.

In short, if projections hold, China will surpass the United States as the world’s largest economy in as little as twenty years. But the time to act is now. In A Bull in China, you’ll learn what industries offer the newest and best opportunities, from power, energy, and agriculture to tourism, water, and infrastructure. In his trademark down-to-earth style, Rogers demystifies the state policies that are driving earnings and innovation, takes the intimidation factor out of the A-shares, B-shares, and ADRs of Chinese offerings, and encourages any reader to trust his or her own expertise (if you’re a car mechanic, check out their auto industry).

A Bull in China also features fascinating profiles of “Red Chip” companies, such as Yantu Changyu, China’s largest winemaker, which sells a “Healthy Liquor” line mixed with herbal medicines. Plus, if you want to export something to China yourself–or even buy land there–Rogers tells you the steps you need to take.

No other book–and no other author–can better help you benefit from the new Chinese revolution. Jim Rogers shows you how to make the “amazing energy, potential, and entrepreneurial spirit of a billion people” work for you.
