In this clear and concise volume, author David Chandler provides a timely overview of Cambodia, a small but increasingly visible Southeast Asian nation. Praised by the Journal of Asian Studies as an “original contribution, superior to any other existing work,” this acclaimed text has now been completely revised and updated to include material examining the early history of Cambodia, whose famous Angkorean ruins now attract more than one million tourists each year, the death of Pol Pot, and the revolution and final collapse of the Khmer Rouge. The fourth edition reflects recent research by major scholars as well as Chandler’s long immersion in the subject and contains an entirely new section on the challenges facing Cambodia today, including an analysis of the current state of politics and sociology and the increasing pressures of globalization. This comprehensive overview of Cambodia will illuminate, for undergraduate students as well as general readers, the history and contemporary politics of a country long misunderstood.

Cambodia is a land of lush beauty and ancient mystery. Together with Laos and Vietnam it formed what was historically known as Indochina. While the country is still recovering from the effects of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, in recent years it has become an increasingly popular tourist destination. Globe Trekker Ian Wright begins his journey to Cambodia by celebrating Buddha s Day at Phnom Da, the country s oldest temple. From Phnom Da, he travels to Kampot at the base of the Elephant Mountains and explores the extraordinary Bokor Hill Station built by the French in 1912. Then, Ian catches the slow train to Sihanoukville and sets off for the pristine beaches of Koh Rong. From Koh Rong the journey takes him to the capital, Phnom Penh, where he explores the central market and sits in on a rehearsal of traditional Cambodian dance. A short flight to Senmonorom in Cambodia s northern Mondulkiri Province brings Ian to the celebration of a traditional hill tribe wedding. The final leg of the journey takes Ian to Lake Tonle Sap and on to Siem Reap. His visit to Cambodia ends exploring the ruins of the awe inspiring temple complex at Angkor. Along the way.... Sample a bowl of traditional bat soup. Help the Mines Advisory Group clear unexploded mines outside of Phnom Penh. Visit one of the Khmer Rouge s notorious killing fields Take a bicycle tour of Angkor s famous temples, Ta Prohm, the Bayon and Angkor Wat.

The Music of Cambodia

This disc introduces Western ears to folk traditions that are almost unknown, even within Cambodia. The first music listeners hear is a pinpeat orchestra, a combination of reeds, fiddles and percussion--from bamboo marimbas, drums, metal clappers and bass drums. The music sounds like a gamelan, but with more drive, and a jazzy, improvisational feel. Next is a Taam Ming group--taam is the sound of a drum, ming the sound of a gong--playing music for funerals. These tunes are slow and mournful, with extended somber improvisations on the srlay (Cambodian oboe). Last is a trot orchestra, a group that plays a drum-and-vocal based folk music common to Northern Cambodia, that sounds at times similar to reggae funde drumming rituals. --j. poet

"The future here could be sadder than the present," writes Robert Kaplan in a chapter about the African nation of Sierra Leone. From Kaplan's perspective, the same could be said of virtually the entire Third World, which he spends the bulk of this book visiting and describing. Kaplan, an acclaimed foreign correspondent and author of Balkan Ghosts, is congenitally pessimistic about the developmental prospects of West Africa, the Nile Valley, and much of Asia. This traveler's tale offers dire warnings about overpopulation, environmental degradation, and social chaos. We should all hope that Kaplan's forecast is wrong, but we ignore him at our peril.

Homrong: Classical Music from Cambodia

Homrong by CHUM Ngek captures a rare performance of the twelve sacred songs that are pivotal to the Khmer classical music tradition known as pin peat.
The term, Homrong, refers to the entire series of pieces preserved on this recording. The sequence contains a complex body of Khmer artistic and cultural knowledge in condensed form.
The artist conceived the project in the mid-1990s when he realized that his life as an immigrant to the United States had simultaneously saved and put at risk his abundant musical knowledge. That he made it to the U.S. at all after nearly four years of life in Cambodia under the genocidal Khmer Rouge offered promise for the future of the three genres (pin peat, mohori, and phleng kar) he had mastered by the age of eighteen. CHUM was among the few fortunate and highly talented musicians to have escaped execution during the 1970s.
The artist says about his life in America: "In the U.S. I cannot make my living as a musician, so I do all of my teaching and performing on the weekends and evenings. And my students don't have much time to learn either. It has been hard for me to describe all of the music that I know and all of the skills that I have developed. There has been no way for me to teach the real art of Khmer music."
In 1998, CHUM became seriously ill and realized that, if suddenly he were unable to teach or play, all of his music would be lost. According to CHUM, "If I can only make one CD, Homrong is the one to make. That's because everything you need is in Homrong. It contains all of the basic pin peat repertoire as well as variations and techniques of individual teachers and musicians. If you can play Homrong, you can play anything."

The Killing Fields

This harrowing but rewarding 1984 drama concerns the real-life relationship between New York Times reporter Sidney Schanberg and his Cambodian assistant Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor), the latter left at the mercy of the Khmer Rouge after Schanberg--who chose to stay after American evacuation but was booted out--failed to get him safe passage. Filmmaker Roland Joffé, previously a documentarist, made his feature debut with this account of Dith's rocky survival in the ensuing madness of the Khmer Rouge's genocidal campaign. The script spends some time with Schanberg's feelings of guilt after the fact, but most of the movie is a shattering re-creation of hell on Earth. The late Haing S. Ngor--a real-life doctor who had never acted before and who lived through the events depicted by Joffé--is outstanding, and he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Oscars also went to cinematographer Chris Menges and editor Jim Clark. --Tom Keogh

Soul Survivors gives voice to the women and children who stayed in Cambodia after the genocide (1975-1979), when nearly two million people died from execution, starvation, or disease. It also includes the stories of two refugees who came to the US as orphans, returning as young adults to help their country. These engaging personal narratives reveal that hope and kindness survived the darkest period of Cambodia's recent history.
Sixty-four photographs draw the reader into contemporary Cambodia to witness the survivors' courageous work to rebuild their lives, families, and culture in one of the poorest nations of the world. Soul Survivors includes a chronology of Cambodian history, a map, and an index. Additional chapters describe the Khmer Rouge, the role of the US, the landmine situation, and the Buddhist peace movement.

First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers (P.S.)

Written in the present tense, First They Killed My Father will put you right in the midst of the action--action you'll wish had never happened. It's a tough read, but definitely a worthwhile one, and the author's personality and strength shine through on every page. Covering the years from 1975 to 1979, the story moves from the deaths of multiple family members to the forced separation of the survivors, leading ultimately to the reuniting of much of the family, followed by marriages and immigrations. The brutality seems unending--beatings, starvation, attempted rape, mental cruelty--and yet the narrator (a young girl) never stops fighting for escape and survival. Sad and courageous, her life and the lives of her young siblings provide quite a powerful example of how war can so deeply affect children--especially a war in which they are trained to be an integral part of the armed forces. For anyone interested in Cambodia's recent history, this book shares a valuable personal view of events. --Jill Lightner

The Music of Cambodia, Volume 3: Solo Instrumental Music

The third volume of The Music of Cambodia completes a musical document trilogy, bringing to Western audiences for the first time the sounds that the ancient rulers of the Khmer Empire might have heard. After presenting the rare instrumental and musical traditions of the Angkor Wat region in The Music of Cambodia, Volume 1 and the music of the Royal Court in The Music of Cambodia, Volume 2, producer David Parsons returned to Phnom Penh to record solo performances by some of the finest living musicians in Cambodia. While the first two releases in this series focused on the surprising vitality and high standards of ensemble playing in traditional Khmer music, this volume gives the individual musicians a chance to show off their virtuosity and the range of colors available on their instruments.
The solo instrumental music heard in The Music of Cambodia, Volume 3 includes examples of most of the major wind instruments and several string instruments, both plucked and bowed. In fact, both the oldest and rarest instruments still prominent in Cambodia are represented here.
Although many of these solo performances have a courtly air to them and might remind listeners of the court music of China or Japan, in fact, most of them were originally associated with weddings or ritual healing ceremonies. Some are actually quite buoyant while others are more contemplative. Three of the songs are from one of the wandering minstrels who are so popular throughout Cambodia. All present Western listeners with a rare opportunity to hear echoes of music from ten centuries ago, in a setting that is as accessible as it is exotic.

City of Ghosts

Despite its brief theatrical release and dismal box-office returns, City of Ghosts marked an impressive directorial debut for Matt Dillon. While transplanting a film noir plot to exotic locations that John Huston might've found inviting, Dillon plays to his strengths as an actor, casting himself as a con artist with a guilty conscience, traveling to Cambodia to locate his unscrupulous mentor and partner (James Caan) and extricate himself from a career of bilking innocent victims. The dangerous territory includes a two-faced schemer (Stellan Skarsgård), a burly French hotelier (Gerard Depardieu), and an alluring architectural restorer (Natascha McElhone) tossed in for obligatory love interest, and Dillon (with cowriter and Wild at Heart author Barry Gifford) creates an engrossing sense of escalating danger as his character sinks into a quagmire of personal and political corruption. Humid atmosphere and colorful scenery add depth and texture to the film's familiar pulp-fictional trappings, suggesting a promising new direction for Dillon's offbeat career. --Jeff Shannon

Colonial Cambodia's 'Bad Frenchmen'

At the same time a biography and a history of how Cambodia became colonized by the French in the nineteenth century, Cambodia's Bad Frenchmen offers a captivating account of a little-known period of colonial history. Drawing on new materials from French, Vietnamese and Cambodian archives, it reconstructs a time during which France struggled to give meaning and substance to its Protectorate over Cambodia. The book focuses on those sitting on the boundaries between the worlds of the colonizers and the colonized: indigenous interpreters, go-betweens, concubines and their m?tis children, and marginal Europeans who failed to fashion a proper colonial existence - mauvais colonists - notably Thomas Caraman. They all constituted a challenge to the colonial enterprise by muddling its social, cultural and racial boundaries. In its consideration of the critical role played by these groups, this book shifts away from governor-generals, grand discourses and the simple view of colonialism as "colonizers" versus "colonized," to explore how things actually worked themselves out on the ground. It examines in particular the "civilizing mission" and educational initiatives; the slow destruction of the indigenous justice system; the policing of sexual relations between colonizers and colonized; the theft of Cambodian land and taxes by the colonizing power; and the brutal repression of resistance wherever and whenever it appeared. Overall, Cambodia's Bad Frenchmen reveals the crucial role played by indigenous middlemen and marginal Europeans in the rise of the colonial state, and tells the fascinating tale of a Frenchman who came to represent everything that the colonial state dreaded.

Children of Cambodia's Killing Fields: Memoirs by Survivors

Dith Pran, the Cambodian photojournalist portrayed by Haing S. Ngor in The Killing Fields, compiled this collection of eyewitness accounts to the genocide perpetrated by Pol Pot's regime from 1975 to 1979. All of the survivors who recount their stories here were children when the Khmer Rouge took power, and the horrific images from a time when an estimated third of the Cambodian population died of disease, starvation, and execution remain fixed in their minds to this day.
The bleakness of evil made commonplace permeates these testaments. "There was a man who was friends with a woman, and they had a friendly chat under a tree," one woman writes. "Pol Pot saw them and accused them of having an affair... Pol Pot tied them up on a cross and then told everyone to watch the couple being questioned and hit. The lady was pregnant and was hit until she lost the baby and died. The man was also beaten to death." As Cambodians struggle to rebuild their lives and nation, books such as this make sure that they--and we--will never forget the depths from which they have been forced to rise.

ABC News Classic News Cambodia: This Shattered Land

From 1970-1975, there was constant warfare on Cambodian soil--Americans versus Vietnamese, then Cambodians versus Cambodians. What emerged from the chaos was a disciplined and determined communist force, the Khmer Rouge, one of the cruelest movements in history. Led by Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge forced Cambodia into their image of an ideal communist society--an agrarian state where every aspect of everyone's life was controlled by the central organization. The country was turned into a vast labor camp. Families split up, monasteries closed, religion abolished, so were schools, books, money, and modern medicine. Doctors, former army officers, the educated, and government workers were systematically hunted down and executed. Almost 4 years later, the Vietnamese overthrew the Khmer Rouge, and what was left retreated to mountains of northwest Cambodia. ABC News went to Cambodia to explore the situation in Cambodia just after the Khmer Rouge was overthrown, and spoke to Pol Pot who was in hiding at the time, in what was his only interview for American television.
Correspondent: Jim Laurie Airdate: 3/29/1980
This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media.
