Civil Society by Design: Donors, NGOs, and the Intermestic Development Circle in Bangladesh

Drawing on years of research and direct experience in Bangladesh, Stiles pulls together theoretical strands from economics, sociology, and anthropology to help explain an emerging social structure in the Third World. These structures, which he calls "intermestic development circles," bring together international donor agencies with various domestic community and private organizations. In Bangladesh not-for-profit agencies are dramatically transforming their operation and organizational cultures, while in turn Western NGOs are themselves changing in subtle ways. Scholars of development will find Stiles's intriguing account of the reciprocating effects of extensive interaction, cooperation, and tensions between international donors and domestic recipients informative and provocative. Moving through three discernable phases, each one explainable by resort to different theories, these development circles grow from mere trading arrangements to a coherent social structure, separate from the rest of civil society in Bangladesh. While in the process of the not-for-profits receiving assistance become wealthier and more effective, they lose much of their local identity and become part of a transnational network. At the same time, donors must recast themselves in order to work effectively with these agencies, which often creates tension between local and home offices. The book closes with some recommendations that might attenuate some of the more troubling effects of this transformation.

The Concert for Bangladesh (Limited Deluxe Edition)

Before We Are the World, before the Amnesty International concerts, before Live Aid, Live 8, 46664, and all the other charitable and/or political events that have used popular music as their principal draw, there was George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, a stirring affair released here in a fine two-disc set. The cause--raising money for the beleaguered people of Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan), who were ravaged by war, floods, and famine--was enough to attract the support of stars like the former Beatle, who had never fronted a band before, along with Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton, both of whom had been out of the limelight for some years due to various personal problems and choices. Given the little time that Harrison, whose help had been solicited by sitar master Ravi Shankar, had to organize the affair, the results are very impressive indeed: the enormous band, which also features Ringo Starr, Leon Russell, and Billy Preston, is tight, the music (spotlighting tunes from Harrison's All Things Must Pass, along with a few Beatle numbers) inspired, the musicians at the top of their games. (Only Clapton is sub-par; looking out of it and playing weakly, he's a far cry from the guy who, some 30 years later, would spearhead the magnificent Concert for George.) For some, the opportunity to see Dylan onstage with Harrison, Starr, and Russell (playing bass) will be the big attraction. Others will thrill to the remastered DVD sound and restored picture. Still others will revel in an entire disc of bonus material, including three previously-unreleased performances and a documentary featuring new interviews with many of the participants. 1971 was a bleak period in rock history; the Beatles had broken up, Hendrix, Joplin, and Morrison were dead, Woodstock was a distant memory. The Concert for Bangladesh shone like a beacon, a revelation of the better angels that reside within us all.
The Concert for Bangladesh

Ravi Shankar planted the seed, but it was George Harrison who turned this historic benefit concert into reality. The publicity-shy former Beatle could've easily written a check and forgotten all about the matter--impoverished East Pakistani refugees stranded in India--but instead recruited some of his most talented and compassionate friends and created an event remembered as much for the quality of its music as the purity of its intent. (The two-part engagement itself raised $250,000.) The players include Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, and Bob Dylan, while the backing band includes Jim Keltner, Klaus Voormann, and the up-and-coming Apple band Badfinger (Phil Spector and Harrison produced). The concert took place on August 1, 1971 at Madison Square Garden and was released as a triple-album boxed set that December and a feature film in 1972. That year, it won the Grammy for best album. The program begins with Shankar and his trio ("Bangla Dhun") and ends with a song Harrison wrote for the occasion ("Bangla Desh"). Highlights include Billy Preston's rousing "That's the Way God Planned It" and Dylan's heartfelt five-song set, starting with "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." The remaster adds an additional Dylan track, "Love Minus Zero/No Limit," from the afternoon show. Although the cover art has been changed to a picture of Harrison, the original iconic image of a sad-eyed child remains prominent in the CD and DVD packaging. As with previous versions of The Concert for Bangladesh, all artist royalties go to UNICEF or, as Harrison notes in his band introduction, "Nobody's gettin' paid for anything." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Hazards in a Fickle Environment: Bangladesh (Advances in Natural and Technological Hazards Research)

This interdisciplinary volume presents first-hand longitudinal research on the riverine hazards in Bangladesh. The book addresses the profound significance of the societal aspects and human geographical dimensions of natural disasters. The characteristics and nature of responses to floods and riverbank erosion hazards are examined, as well as the assessment of the impact of the hazards. The book states that disaster impacts are caused as much by social, economic, political and cultural factors as they are by the fickle physical environment of the Quaternary alluvial floodplains. Massive physical-structural intervention in event controlling could become ineffective. A new approach is offered which considers the ecological sensitivity and dynamics of the Ganges-Brahmaputra deltaic system, and the related socio-cultural adaptations of people to these riverine events. Audience: This is a key book for research scientists and students of geography, anthropology, ecology and environmental, population and development studies as well as for professionals specializing in natural and anthropogenic disasters.

Concert For Bangladesh

And it still does. --Sam Graham

Broken Pendulum: Bangladesh's Swing to Radicalism

This book, conceived long before the takeover of the political system by the Bangladeshi Armed Forces on January 11, 2007, was intended to address the long-term challenges to the culture and practice of democracy in this young South Asian nation. While the post-takeover reality introduces a multitude of new factors, some of which intensify and some of which work against previous trends, the fact is that the challenges to Bangladeshi democracy remain essentially the same. The new reality has merely reshuffled many issues; it would be as dangerous to consider this new episode of military rule in Bangladesh a panacea for the nation’s troubles as it would be reckless to call it an ill that supersedes all other ills.

In the garden of the house she has built, her roses are blooming, her children are almost grown, and beyond their doorstep, the city is buzzing with excitement after recent elections. Change is in the air.

But none of the guests at Rehana's party can foresee what will happen in the days and months ahead. For this is 1971 in East Pakistan, a country on the brink of war. And this family's life is about to change forever.

Set against the backdrop of the Bangladesh War of Independence, A Golden Age is a story of passion and revolution, of hope, faith and unexpected heroism. In the chaos of this era, everyone—from student protesters to the country's leaders, from rickshaw'wallahs to the army's soldiers—must make choices. And as she struggles to keep her family safe, Rehana will be forced to face a heartbreaking dilemma.

The Clay Bird

A visually stunning, culturally fascinating, politically timely film based on the director’s own childhood, THE CLAY BIRD has been called one of the most important works to come out of the Muslim world. Set against the backdrop of Pakistan during the turbulent 1960s, a family is ripped apart by religious beliefs and civil war. Anu, a shy young boy from rural East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), is sent away by his father Kazi, an orthodox Muslim, to a Madrasah. Far from his family and the warmth of his region’s vibrant Hindu festivities, Anu struggles to adapt to the Islamic school’s harsh monastic life. As political divisions in the country intensify, a split develops between moderate and extremist forces within the Madrasah. In the village, these same tensions create a growing divide between the stubborn Kazi and his increasingly independent wife, Ayesha.
THE CLAY BIRD is an authentic and loving portrait of Bangladesh, showing the country in all its color and complexity – its seasonal beauty, rich folkloric traditions, extraordinary music, and pluralistic culture. Touching upon themes of religious tolerance, cultural diversity, and the complexity of Islam, Tareque Masud’s poignant film has a universal relevance in a crisis-ridden world – THE CLAY BIRD should not be missed .

Bangladesh: The Next Afghanistan?

In recent years, Bangladesh has experienced an alarming rise in Islamist fundamentalism. The world began to take serious notice of this after the grenade attack on the Awami League’s rally in Dhaka on August 21, 2004 almost succeeded in killing off the entire top leadership of the party. This book shows that terrorist acts such as this are part of a systematic attempt to destroy Bangladesh’s secular and democratic political parties, as well as its vibrant intellectual and cultural life, and to convert the country into a hardline Islamic one. The author further argues that the headquarters of Islamic terrorism is shifting from Afghanistan to Bangladesh, which he describes as a ‘soft’ state with an ineffective government and police force, and which Islamist groups, with their organized and well-armed cadres, can easily dominate. Islamists are being systematically placed in key positions in government, and an Islamist state within a state is being built for the ultimate takeover of Bangladesh as the base for Islamist-including Al Qaeda and Taliban-operations in South and Southeast Asia. This lucid, hard-hitting and well-documented book analyzes in detail the circumstances-historical, social, cultural and political-which account for the rise of violent Islamist fundamentalism in Bangladesh, a country known for its cultural plurality and religious tolerance. The author also discusses the chances of halting the process, through a determined and well-strategized effort by those committed to keeping Bangladesh a moderate and tolerant modern Islamic nation.

Bangladesh: From A Nation To A State (Nations of the Modern World: Asia)

In 1996, Bangladesh celebrates its 25th anniversary. When the country became independent from Pakistan in 1971, it proclaimed itself a parliamentary democracy with four goals—democracy, secularism, socialism, and nationalism. This comprehensive introduction to Bangladesh’s history, polity, economy, and society reassesses its successes and failures in reaching these goals after a quarter century of nationhood.Craig Baxter traces the development of national identity in the region, first as part of India and then of Pakistan, and the slow evolution toward statehood. He also explores the formative periods of Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, and British government that preceded Pakistani rule and subsequent independence. Anyone wishing to understand this poor, populous, but ambitious young nation will find this book an invaluable reference.

Bangladesh: Anatomy of Change

With 130 million people crammed into an area smaller than the state of Georgia, a per capita GDP of around $300 a year, a quixotic climate and a culture of bribes, threats and corruption, Bangladesh faces a growing crisis. Will it make "a great leap forward" and meet the demands of globalization and a knowledge-based world trade regime? Or will it choke on the polluted air of stale industries, stagnant initiatives and politicized education? Change, claims the author, is essential. As president of the country's leading business forum, the FBCCI, Abdul Awal Mintoo brings a managerial mindset to the problem: Can his wide-ranging suggestions, set out in this lucid and revealing study, work? He cites many that are already under way, and others that are nearing completion. A pragmatist, he offers nothing less than a blueprint for survival. Fully researched, and referenced with tables, notes and maps, this guide will be of immense usefulness to students and administrators, as well as to the business community. It offers hope and the light of wisdom to a nation that is close to the author's heart.

Quiet Violence: View from a Bangladesh Village (Third World Studies)

A quiet violence today stalks the villages and shanty towns of the Third World, the violence of needless hunger. In this book, two Bengali-speaking Americans take the reader to a Bangladesh village where they lived for nine months. There, the reader meets some of the world's poorest people - peasants, sharecroppers and landless labourers - and some of the not-so-poor people who profit from their misery. The villagers' poverty is not fortuitous, a result of divine dispensation or individual failings of character. Rather, it is the outcome of a long history of exploitation, culminating in a social order which today benefits a few at the expense of many.

Expatriate Games - 662 days in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a destination for only the most battle-scarred traveller. Henry Kissinger's infamous basket case label is not entirely unfounded, and it is against this backdrop that the autobiographical account Expatriate Games takes place.
In 1995 Mark Trenowden, recently 'retired' from the wine trade in London, packed up his life in Britain to follow his Canadian fiancée, Brenda, to her new and extraordinary place of work. This is the true story of the hardships, frustrations and fun experienced by the foreigner living and working in Bangladesh. It explores the strange world of the expatriate abroad, in which Mark and Brenda attempt to lead a Western lifestyle behind closed doors without compromising their role in the local office they are striving to create.
Expatriate Games charts a fascinating and engrossing voyage of discovery. The author's look at Bangladesh is both critical and sympathetic, with any exasperation accompanied by a willingness to see people as individuals.
Whether you are a seasoned expat, soon to be posted abroad, or just an armchair explorer, there will be plenty here to entertain, terrify and amuse you!

Constructing Bangladesh: Religion, Ethnicity, and Language in an Islamic Nation (Islamic Civilization and Muslim Networks)

Highlighting the dynamic, pluralistic nature of Islamic civilization, Sufia Uddin examines the complex history of Islamic state formation in Bangladesh, formerly the eastern part of the Indian province of Bengal. Uddin focuses on significant moments in the region's history from medieval to modern times, examining the interplay of language, popular and scholarly religious literature, and the colonial experience as they contributed to the creation of a unique Bengali-Islamic identity.
During the precolonial era, Bengali, the dominant regional language, infused the richly diverse traditions of the region, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and, eventually, the Islamic religion and literature brought by Urdu-speaking Muslim conquerors from North India. Islam was not simply imported into the region by the ruling elite, Uddin explains, but was incorporated into local tradition over hundreds of years of interactions between Bengalis and non-Bengali Muslims. Constantly contested and negotiated, the Bengali vision of Islamic orthodoxy and community was reflected in both language and politics, which ultimately produced a specifically Bengali-Muslim culture. Uddin argues that this process in Bangladesh is representative of what happens elsewhere in the Muslim world and is therefore an instructive example of the complex and fluid relations between local heritage and the greater Islamic global community, or umma.
