There may be many good reasons to make Singapore your first destination in Asia. First, the city is clean, smooth and safe for visitors to travel by their own means. Then, if you are traveling to several Asian destinations, there is a bewildering variety of full service airlines and low cost from the airport in Singapore. Also, English is widely spoken here.
Above all, Singapore offers the cultures of three ethnic groups: Chinese, Malays and Indians. What’s more enjoyable than to see three Asian communities in one location?
Indeed, the descendants of Asian immigrants have made Singapore a melting pot of cultures, with ancient traditions practice.
Discover the unique traditions in Singapore to visit the so-called “ethnic enclaves” Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Little India. Each one of these beautiful areas in May to enjoy a quiet stroll.
Chinatown:
When the founder of Singapore, Stamford Raffles set aside land for Chinatown, which dictates that buildings should be made permanent materials. Thank you for the Raffles and a conservation effort, Chinatown is now a place to admire the architecture of Singapore in early Shophouse.
Many businesses house here, however, have been replaced by more activities such as high-end Chinese restaurants and teahouses. And also. Opium Dens, brothels and houses of death (when sentenced to die) used to cover many of the shophouses here. Today, we see only the pictures and models of these firms in the Chinatown Heritage Center.
However, Chinatown retains a strong sense of “Chinese-ness’.
Restaurants in Chinatown used to serve only local and Southern Chinese food. Today, however, will find many restaurants offering cuisines from other parts of China. It is headed by first generation immigrants who came from various provinces of China. Oldest Chinese temple in Singapore – the refined Thian Hock Keng Temple – is also available here. Worth visiting quaint shops specializing in Chinese calligraphy, antiques and traditional costumes.
Kampong Glam:
Kampong Glam is called so because the tree Gelam – a relative of the eucalyptus – used to increase this area.
Today, the Malays in Singapore continue to converge at Kampong Glam, as the Sultan Mosque – the largest mosque in Singapore – is here.
Mosque of Sultan has a fascinating history. It was rebuilt in 1928 after a major fundraising project. Many poor people who donated the building obviously has money collecting and selling bottles. If you visit the mosque, you will see the main dome of sitting in a black framework structure composed entirely of glass bottles. It is difficult to explain why they are there.
It should also be made here is the laboratory in Malaysia Cultural Heritage Center. You can spend a day casting your own pottery and create your own batik art. Otherwise, go in the Arab streets and have a nice wicker laundry basket, an Afghan rug, or a beautiful piece of silk dress that turns heads.
Little India:
The main street in Little India is Serangoon Road. So far, it remains at the heart of the Indian community in Singapore.
A nice walk starts near the Tekka Center. This prepares your nostrils overwhelming aroma of many spices and jasmine garlands, traders sell in abundance. You will also find a variety of baffling-husked coconut, lime, clay pots and others, who used to worship in the temples nearby.
Linger awhile and admire the women in colorful Saris and flamboyant that bargain with stall holders for the price of groceries. This is also true that the Singapore issues.
If you have not entered a Hindu temple, the temple of Sri Veerama Kaliamman Belilios Road is a must-see. Here, it should first be impressed by the realistic sculptures of Hindu deities. Inside, Indian music creates an atmosphere conducive for religious devotees. Visitors can participate in the process, or simply to admire the incredibly life-like statue of Hindu goddess Kali.
The music of Bollywood, curries and colorful Saris also has not escaped your attention to Little India. If you like shopping and dining, you’ll be spoiled for choice.
The merging of cultures:
These tribal areas are obviously not mutually exclusive and there are many inter-mixing between ethnic groups in Singapore. For example, you can find a Malay mosque attended the glorious Little India and a large Indian temple in the heart of Chinatown. All these elements make for a fascinating visit.
